How I started in wedding photography.

It’s a question that gets asked quite often – ”why and how did you get into wedding photography?”

I would be lying if I said that I had always wanted to  be a wedding photographer. That since I was young I was in my Grandpa’s dark room helping him develop –  I wish I had such an exciting story. The truth is, is that I have always loved photography – but more the result. I loved pouring over old photo albums and lose pictures my mum still keeps in a box. In fact, I still love looking at old pictures. It’s nostalgic and there is something happy about it. But that was as far as my passion went.

Fast forward a few years when I went to Australia with my friend. My parents had got me a little red Kodak for Christmas that I loved. I took it everywhere, and on this particular trip. I think it was then the connection that I could be a documenter. Perhaps even a story teller. I would take my pictures for just Facebook at first, but there was a slow burn starting. After the trip I went straight back into a full time job and within the first 3 days was looking at places at universities where I could do a fine art degree in photography. A couple of issues to note; I didn’t know hardly anything about photography & I didn’t really have a clue what Fine Art was. Needless to say I never made the course. But, like I said,  a slow burn had started, so I  turned to the internet, when I found one of my biggest influences – Jasmine Star. She was showing me how wedding photography didn’t just have to be boring and old. It could be stylish and beautiful!

From here I became addicted to learning and teaching myself. When friends of my parents who were getting married asked me if I wanted to document their wedding I jumped at the chance. They were both second time in the marriage department and a photographer was  not on their to hire list. I didn’t have a clue what I was doing but I still went for it. I was armed with a film camera over one shoulder and my small Olympus over the other. I didn’t get paid any money and my camera died just after the signing of the register. But, from that wedding a friend of the bride asked me to photograph her wedding and from their a small snowball had started.

My favourite kinds of friendships are those that don’t need constantly saturating with communication. The kinds that can stand on their own and when you see them again, pick up right where you left off. One such friendship is one I have with Jason and Jess. Jason is pretty much considered family in my own family. He served with my brother when they were in the military and we were fans of him from the start. When Jason got with Jess, then married her and had their first child – well  – we loved it! I’m blessed that I’ve been able to combine my job & my passion and help record beautiful moments in peoples lives.

Jason and Jess recetlly, well I say recently, just over a year ago had their first boy  – Cassian. Such a little beauty. For his 1st birthday we created some family memories. We went to the woods, the light was beautiful and we took a moment to make time stand still and get some pictures what life looks like now. Here is to MANY MANY more beautiful years. xx

The Mini Sessions

Growing up,  getting family portraits done often, wasn’t something that we did often. I think I mentioned early this week that I am forever 7 years old in my mothers hallway.  Even though  we all want professional pictures of our lives and family – we don’t always have the spare cash spare for it. So I decided that I wanted to make that experience attainable – for everyone.

Some people may know that once a year I host a little thing called The Mini Sessions. In a nutshell, these sessions are my normal  family, children, portrait, life-styles session’s  but condensed into 30 minutes for a fraction of the price. This year was really busy and I thought I would share a few of the highlights. Some are not actually included as they are portrait gifts for Christmas  and I don’t want to be the one to spoil that!

Anyone can get involved in The Mini Sessions: Couples, newborn, maternity, pets, portraits, families, children, anyone at all ;-)

So, at your allocated times slot, you come to the chosen location and for 30 minutes we have fun. Then after the session, you get sent your on-line gallery where you can chose your favourite 10. Simples ;-)

Here are what a few others have had to say -

”Had a lovely afternoon mini shoot with tasha. We felt relaxed, we had fun and it made for some gorgeous natural pictures
Tasha has a real talent for capturing moments you don’t even realise have happened, the picture of my oldest son holding his baby brother and gazing at him is absolutely amazing!
I would definitely do a mini session again and can’t wait to see them advertised!!”  – Liz

”My three boys usually hate having their photos taken! This was our second mini session with Natasha and she makes it so easy. Within minutes they were relaxed, laughing and joking. I love the photos because they are so natural and they actually don’t mind having it done. Gorgeous gorgeous photos and very reasonable. Will definitely be back next year! Thank you.” – Kate

Little David.

This year my family has grown by two. I had a little niece called Ava (one of my sisters) and a nephew called David (my brothers). I’m lucky enough that most of my little lovelies (there are 5 in total) live near by. Little David however, lives in South Africa so understandably seeing him isn’t as frequent. But at the end of Summer we were treated to a visit, which meant we could kiss, cuddle and generally love on him as much as we wanted – we made the most of it. Oh and i got to meet my new sister-in-law. Double win!

Having a photographer in the family has it perks- well, for everyone else. It means that we are able to have professional pictures – something we rarely had growing up. In fact, I think it only happened once and I will forever be aged around 7 in my mothers hallway! There was no way I was letting the visit pass without getting some pictures in. It wasn’t for long. It wasn’t fancy. But it was them, it was me, it was real and it was  full of his gorgeous smile. I’m sad that  I won’t be seeing him at Christmas, but thankful for being able to see his little face through my lens.

Wasted time.

Through the nature of my hours, I’m generally working at the weekend, so when I’m not, i’m definitely having days of indulgence which  cover a whole host of my favourite things. I like wasting my time doing the simple things and love spending my hours with my favourites. Pouring over a cook book looking for something to create actually makes me happy. Setting some time aside to curl up with a book and get lost for a while  never get’s old. Ringing my mum for the 9th time that day just to say hi. Planning, pen and paper in hand letting my thoughts become tangible. Walking in the fresh air. Spending time with him, just chatting, saying nothing at all and doing anything. Eating out & drinking – I cant think of a nicer way to put it – I enjoy it. Documenting – everything. Fixing the house.Travelling to a new place. Feeling the wind at the edge of the ocean. Pressing my toes in the sand. Feeling the kiss of the sun on my face.Taking that extra hour lie in.

Whatever way you want to waste your time, just make sure you enjoy it.

John Lennon said it perfect –  ”Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted time”

Happy Monday – waste it happily.

Missing the details.

It’s funny how you can over look things when you’re in the thick of it. When you get used to seeing something, you get used to it – in whatever condition it’s in –  which is sometimes not good at all.  I recently looked at my own blog as a client would and realised that it was pretty bad. Sure the content is there, but there is so much more that is missing. So many details that are missing. There’s so much more that I want people to be able to see, read, connect with and hopefully  – possibly – learn from.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been trying to get things together for the make-over and things are coming along nicely, sometimes a little stressfully, but nether the less I’m moving forward. I’m finding the kind of look and style of how I want to showcase my work. I’m such a huge fan of blogs. The  bits that I love the most though from the blogs that I pour over (and there a quite a few), are the personal posts. The bit’s that show the life behind the scenes, so you can start to actually get to know the person. So, if I am a tad quite on here at the moment it’s just because I am re-evaluating and trying to get things waaaay more personal ;-) Oh, and it’s nearly Christmas so there is a good chance i’m sipping a baileys coffee somewhere – singing Christmas songs.

What do you use?

Getting people to find out about your business can be hard. There are so many avenues to go down to promote yourself and so many ways of getting peoples attention and in all honesty, it can make you want to give up before you even start. But don’t. Instead, play with each method and find out what works for you and stick with it. I personally am better with Blogging, Instagram and facebook. I’ve been blogging for a while now and have my own little grove with it. It’s not perfect and I’m always tweaking and trying to get better, but I started and that’s the hardest part.

How do you promote your business? Do you have any plans that you are going to take into the new year to push your business to the best that it has been yet? Leave your social media in the comments and let’s connect.
